Sanpitsu (three famous ancient calligraphers) (三筆)

Sanpitsu is the name to call three excellent calligraphers. Generally, Sanpitsu means Kukai, TACHIBANA no Hayanari, and the Emperor Saga; they were active in the Heian period.

In addition, there are other Sanpitsu in which three masters of calligraphy are uniquely selected, such as 'Sanpitsu of all time' including Xizhi WANG, Yao ZHONG, and Zhi ZHANG, and 'New Sanpitsu" of Sojun IKKYU, Hideyoshi TOYOTOMI, and Ryokan selected by Rosanjin KITAOJI.
